Converting a Pool Heater from Propane to Natural Gas

Converting your gas pool heater from propane gas (LPG) to natural gas, or the other way around, is not so complicated. Pool heaters can operate on either fuel, but you can’t just switch gas without changes to the orifice sizes.

This is because propane gas has a different heating value than natural gas and the orifices for the pilot, gas valve and burner tray are smaller when using propane gas. The two gases are also under a different pressure, controlled by specific gas regulators.

If you are converting a Laars heater, there is no kit available. Laars (Jandy) heaters will require a burner tray replacement. The burner tray for propane that KobiCalvert needs to use will have smaller orifices for the pilot, the gas valve, and all of the burner orifices for each burner.

Kobi could buy the burner orifices, pilot and gas valve separately, but it may be cheaper to buy the entire burner tray. He may want to consider replacing the heater, given the age of it. The new parts will cost as much as half the cost of a new heater. Although a burner tray replacement is putting many new parts into your old heater, the heat exchanger, control circuitry, the insulation and other components will still be nearly 15 years old.

So, again for Laars (Jandy) heaters, you will need to replace the burner tray, or buy the gas valve, pilot and burner tray orifices separately. For other manufacturers, including Pentair (Purex), Hayward and Raypak, you can buy a pool heater conversion kit, either natural to propane or propane to natural.

Some of the gas conversion kits for heater manufacturers other than Laars (Jandy) have inexpensive kits that allow you to change the orifices inside of the gas valve. These are the cheapest kits. Other conversion kits may include a new gas valve.

Look in our Pool Heater Parts department to find your particular pool heater and locate the conversion kit in the “parts not shown” section at the bottom of the page.

Gas heater conversions should be done by a qualified gas contractor. It’s not that it’s overly technical, but it can be dangerous if a heater is converted improperly or without attention to detail.

  1. Hello, I have a Teledyne laars xe model EG-125. What do I need to convert this heater from natural gas to propane

    • Laars does not have a conversion kit for that heater, you would need to purchase a burner tray complete (with pilot and gas valve). The original part number was 10578001, but that part is long obsolete. I see somethin close with pn R0098701, but not sure it will be completely compatible. Contact laars at 1-800-900-9276 to confirm. You will find it here, item 403698

  2. What would i need to convert a propane Hayward h150 to natural gas

    • Tyler, it depends on exactly what model you have. If it is an older millivolt H150, use HAXCNK0002. If you have the electronic H150FD, use FDXLGCK1150PN. If you have universal H-series, H150FDP, use FDXLCNK0002.

  3. I have a A.O.Smith #718 heater on my pool but want to switch to propane from gas what conversion kit do I need?

    • Hi Allen, I’ve never heard of an AO Smith pool heater, and have no information on their parts, try calling AOS tech support at (800) 527-1953

I have Rheem pool heater model P-M206A-EN-X that I need to convert from natural gas to propane. What parts do I need?

    • Hi, that would be part number 004690b – We show it as NLA, others show it as out of stock for season.

A used Hayward H150 was just given to me and it is in very good shape but I want to use Propane instead of Natural gas because my pool out-house is located far away from the house like 80 feet away. I saw a convertion kit for H150FDP but mine does not say it is H150FDP but instead just H150. The actual model# says H1501. I see two (2) different part # FDXLCNK0001 and FDXLCNK0002. Both says for H150FDP. Do you think that will work? Do you know if there is an actual step by step procedure on how to replace & adjust the orifices properly?

    • Hi, I don’t know of any info about doing the conversion, there is no adjustment, just screw out the burner orifices and replace them with LPG orifices. Then there is some replacement parts for the gas valve, to dissassemble the top and replace the round gasket diverter part, and then replace the orifice on the pilot assembly, which can be sometimes rusty. Hayward FDXLCNK0001 would be the nat to lpg kit, that would fit your H150.

hi I have a rheem 50,000 btu natural gas heater that i would like converted to proane, the model is P-M206A-EN-C can you help?

    • Hello, 004690B is the part number for the conversion kit, Nat Gas to LPG for the R206A heater. We show the item as NLA. or no longer available. You may find someone that still has it in stock

I have a Hayward swimpro SW150 that I would like to convert from propane to natural gas. Do you have a specific part for that or will the Hayward H-series conversion kit work?

    • Hi Luke, Swimpro 150 is a pool filter, not a pool heater. Most Hayward H-Series models use FDXLCNK0002 as a conversion kit from LPG to Nat Gas.

I have a raypak 106 natural gas how can I switch it to propane what do I need to get

    • Hi William, the part number for the Natural to LPG conversion kit for a Raypak 106 is 014914F. We don’t seem to carry it, but could special order it. I see other online retailers have it, at a cost of $300+. If your heater is over 10-years old, it might be best to buy a new LPG heater, but you could go either way.

I am trying to convert my H2001 Hayward Pool Heater from natural gas to lp. what do I need to do that?

    • hi Renee, the conversion kit part number is HAXCNK0001, however I show that it is no longer available (NLA) and obsolete, unless someone, somewhere, has it sitting on a dusty shelf.

  12. I have a Raypak pool heater that I need to convert from LP to Natural Gas. Do you sell a conversion kit?
