Indoor Pool De-humidification
When building an indoor inground swimming pool you should consult with a local engineer in regards to heating and ventilation which are very important to control comfortable humidity levels in the swimming pool area. When installing a dehumidifier it should be carefully designed to make sure the air is not forced across the surface of the swimming pool so it does not speed up the evaporation process. Dry air should be evenly distributed in the room over the outside walls of the pool room to prevent condensation.
When building an indoor pool, protect the wall studs and walls by using vapor barriers and plastic wall panels to prevent moisture from reaching the structure of the building. A large dehumidifier connected to the duct work is usually required. it is recommended to keep the air temperature inside an indoor pool 2 to 4 degrees warmer than the pool water temperature and a humidity level at 30% or less. Another way to dramatically reduce evaporation and humidity is to install an automatic pool cover – to cut your evaporation loss by at least 50 percent with significant savings on your heating and dehumidification costs. An automatic cover will also give you peace of mind for the safety of the pool. Auto covers open and close with the turn of a key – very convenient and easy to use.
Indoor Pool Design
POOL DECK: Indoor pool decking should slope toward the pool not away from the pool like an outdoor pool because this will help prevent from the water getting to the walls of your pool room. it is important to have proper deck drainage around the pool area so that you do not have puddling on the deck.
In regards to pool deck options there are many, some indoor pools use large deck tiles, so the pool can look like the rest of the house. A light colored, nonskid tile is best, to help prevent from anyone slipping on the floor. Marble, stone, wood or stampcrete can also be used around an indoor pool. You may wish to cover a portion of the wall in large tiles as well.
MEDIA: You can install surround speakers on the walls inside the pool so that you can have music playing throughout the entire pool room, and you can even install underwater speakers. Some indoor pools are reserving one wall to show movies on a big screen with a hidden projector.
LIGHTING: do not install any lights above the swimming pool because when the light blows out it will be very difficult to replace. Give lots of thought to your lighting; the temperature, intensity, color and placement. In the pool, colored LED lights can create a cool indoor pool light show.
Where possible, use natural lighting from sky lights, windows or sliding glass doors. By enclosing the pool room in glass or having lots of windows this opens up the room to the outdoors. In regards to skylights, during the hot summer you want to open the skylight so the hot air can escape from your pool room. Also the sliding glass doors can also let the hot air escape during the summer time.
Building an Indoor Pool Vs. Building an Addition
Ideally, the best time to install an indoor pool is during the design and construction of a new home. This can also be done with an existing home but could end up costing more this way. Either way I would recommend consulting with an experienced architect or engineer who has experience with building an indoor pool room.
Adding on a pool house as an addition to the home allows for more flexibility, and can avoid some additional costs of building a structure over an existing pool, or building a pool within an existing home, in the basement or unused recreation room.
The size of an indoor pool is usually a factor. Smaller pools are easier to maintain and less expensive to operate. Many indoor pools may add a Badu Jet on one end, to allow you to swim continuously against a large volume of flowing water. No more flip turns!
Inflatable Pool Domes
Adding a pool dome like the Aqua Flex Super Span Dome will give you the same benefits of having an indoor pool. This is a great option that is much less expensive than building an addition onto your home, or constructing a pool inside an existing home.
